When you recycle your old newspaper, it can be turned into a variety of different products including other newspaper, cereal boxes, egg cartons, pencil barrels, grocery bags, tissue paper, and even TAP® Pest Control Insulation.

FACT: Each metric ton of recycled paper can save approximately 19 trees, 396 gallons of oil, 94 cubic feet of landfill space, 4400 kilowatts of energy, and 7661 gallons of water.

So, how exactly is TAP® Pest Control Insulation made from your newspapers?

Once your recycled paper reaches the recycling center, it may go off “to be bulldozed underground in a landfill or burnt in an incinerator” according to Chris Woodford of ExplainThatStuff.com. However, most paper is diverted to serve as a source for new products such as newsprint, grocery bags, and cellulose-based insulation.

Our manufacturing plants purchase recycled paper which is reduced in size and fed through a disc mill, whose exceedingly fine tolerances explode the fibers of the paper into a soft, gray, cotton-boll-like substance. This fiber is then infused with borates through a proprietary process which gives the product its pesticide properties as well as its thermal and acoustic properties. .

Each 30 pound bag of TAP® Pest Control Insulation contains approximately 87.5% recycled newspaper (about 26.25 pounds) and 12.5% pure-grade Orthoboric Acid (about 4.75 pounds). How’s that for a green building material that is also a pesticide and an insulation in one?
